1. PHARMACOGNOSY FUNGI IN MEDICINE AND LIFE
Fungi Kingdom (science name: Fungi) comprise eukaryote, autotroph and their cell wall based on chitin. Almost fungi develop in the form of filamentous multicellular that is also called hyphae constituting mycelium, other ones develop in the form of monocellular. To date, thousands of fungal species are found and identified. In order to simplify, fungi are classified as follows: visible fungi, invisible fungi or edible fungi and poisonous fungi and etc. Among hundreds of fungal species belong to groups of visible fungi and edible fungi, only several fungal species are used in manufacturing of medicine, which are called pharmacognosy fungi; of which the most important is Ganoderma applanatum, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Trametes versicolor and Hericium erinaceus, etc.
For the past thousands of years, many species of edible fungi are used in medicine field. It is studied for fungal species such as Grifola Frondosa, Lentinula edodes, Inonotus obliquus, Ganoderma applanatum, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Trametes versicolor and Hericium erinaceus, etc. for activity of anti-cancer, antivirus and enhancement of immune system.
Cordyceps sinensis is considered as rare drug, this drug is used in China in order to treatment of diseases about tumors or health enhancement.
Ganoderma applanatum, in particular of Ganoderma lucidum is also considered as “panacea” in Vietnam and many countries of the world with the purpose of treating of cancer, hypertension disease and etc.
Trametes versicolor is considered as rare drug, this drug is used in China more than 2000 years ago in treating of diseases of cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer. Recently, there are many studies about using polysaccharide together with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immune therapy in order to improve ratio of survival of patients suffered from esophageal cancer (Ogoshi and et. al. Cancer Investigation. 1995; 13: 363-369) and nasopharyngeal cancer (Go and Chung. Journal of International Research. 1989; 17: 141-149). Sankyo, Kureha company in Japan marketed Krestin product since 1977 with it’s price of 1000 JPY/bag 1g. These medicines are used in treatment of liver cancer and breast cancer.
Hericium erinaceus is edible fungi and used as drug in many countries of the world. To date, known and inspected effects of this fungi are as follows: inhibiting the growth of tumors, anti-gastric ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori, minimizing the harmful effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, improving immune system, anti-fatigues and anti-Ehzeimer. This drug can be used in treating of the disease of chronic gastritis and inflammatory bowel disease. In particular, this drug can be used in preventing tumors of gastrointestinal tract and improving immune system.
Thanks to that great effects, the exploitation of fungi from the nature or nursery research of pharmacognosy fungi more and more countries are interested.
A long time ago, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and etc., cultivated and used fungi as food and drug sources. Not only fresh fungi are used but in Japan, fungi are manufactured into many products such as: soy sauce, fungal powder, fungal soup, supplemental foods and etc. in treatment of the diseases such as: chronic bronchitis, heart-related diseases, acute and chronic hepatitis, arthritis, diabetes mellitus and etc.
In Vietnam, there are many favorable conditions to be able to cultivate fungi. With the climate of tropical monsoon, abundant raw materials and etc. which are suitable conditions for cultivation of fungi whole year time. While, cultivation of fungi does not require soil but requires a small area, low investment and high efficiency. In developed society, technology develop simultaneously with living conditions and human needs are increasingly enhanced, the pollution of the living environment and serious diseases such as (cancer, blood fats, diabetes mellitus, HIV and etc.) are also appear more and more. At present, the treatment with medicines, chemotherapy are still expensive compared to income of Vietnamese (not to mention their side effects). While, pharmacognosy fungi in general and Ganoderma applanatum, Ophiocordyceps sinensis in particular are relatively cheap (due to we have mastered the technology and manufactured in industrial scale) and high effects in treatment of diseases such as cancer, blood fats, diabetes mellitus, HIV and etc.
To date, we can not deny the active roles and contributions of fungal industry to nature and human life. So, in most countries of the world, fungal industry is increasingly interested by the governments. Thereby, in recent years, fungal industry has been developing strongly in Korea, China, Japan and etc.
In Vietnam, fungal industry are interested in research from decades 60-70 of XX century and just be focused in a few recent years. However, due to effectiveness and attractiveness as well as its important influence to many field, so fungal industry has become a strong development movement and its important contributions to development of society. The cultivation of fungi has had positive impact on many fields such as agriculture and forestry, medical and pharmaceutical fields, environmental protection and etc., even in the field of sports. In each field, it has opened the modes making life safer, healthier and higher productivity.
The cultivation of fungi has contributed to the settlement of employment, increased income for farmers and enriched for many households.
With the main source is agricultural and industrial waste, cultivation of fungi not only contribute to the settlement of environmental pollution problem happening in global scale but obtain fungal biomass-safe nutrient source for human that is one of the sources of rare medicinal materials. At present, it has been using in prevention and treatment of diseases. In which, Ganoderma applanatum and Ophiocordyceps sinensis are considered as panacea, it is able to cure the panacea, help people longevity. Modern pharmacological studies improved that there are organic compounds, trace elements and vitamins in Ganoderma applanatum and Ophiocordyceps sinensis. These active compounds have special effects in treatment of immunodeficiency symptoms, nervous tension, insomnia, symptoms of cardiovascular system, obesity, diabetes mellitus, prevention of AIDS and slows the progression of disease in patients suffered from these diseases. At present, it is possible to use common methods of formulation such as in alcohol, cut into the slices and boil and get water, grinding powder to drink with water, formulation in the form of tablets, capsules and etc.
2. MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGY IN MANUFACTURING MYCELIUM ESSENCE FROM PHARMACOGNOSY FUNGI OF BIOCARE
A long time ago, human do not cultivate fungi but mainly harvest it from nature. The Kings usually offer people to deep forest and high mountain in order to find Ganoderma applanatum or have to go to areas such as the Tibetan plateau to find Ophiocordyceps sinensis. Basically, the processes of production of edible fungal and pharmacognosy fungal species in general and Ganoderma applanatum, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Trametes versicolor, Hericium erinaceus in particular have used dominant fermentation technology, that is, provide favorable medium for dominant development of fungi in order to obtain most biomass. The processes of production are as follows:
Materials, for example, substrates (wood, sawdust, cotton and etc., and some other insect species) —> Pasteurizing treatment by using bio-fermentation technology (added cellulose and protein-degrading microorganisms) —> Transplant (purebred, F3) —> Nursing of mycelium (several months) —> Stimulating of mycelium body growing fruit-body —> Caring for fruit-body —> Harvesting and preserving fruit-body —> Processing of fruit-body —> Producing commercialized products on the market.
In the recent years, with strong scientific development in many fields, the studies proved useful effects of pharmacognosy fungi in general and Ganoderma applanatum, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Trametes versicolor, Hericium erinaceus in particular. Therefore, demand of people belong to all social classes on these fungal species is more and more increasing. Besides that environmental degradation and pollution are more and more increasing. So, the biomass source of these fungi is decreased relatively much in quantity and specially, significantly decreased in quality. Therefore, many countries such as USA, Germany, Korea, Japan, China have achieved successes in research on the technology of producing fungal biomass in artificial conditions and at high level of technology: cultivation of fungi for producing fungal biomass in the form of mycelium in industrial scale.
